Mr. Darrell R. Kitchen
February 8, 1938 - March 23, 2012
Darrell Rowley Kitchen, 74, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2012, in Provo, UT, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 8, 1938 in Orem, UT, to Norval T. Kitchen and Fay Rowley Kitchen. He married Karen Garner on March 30, 1961 in the Salt Lake Temple. Darrell loved life. He grew up in Hyrum and Orem, Utah, and received his AA, BA & MA degrees from Snow College & Brigham Young University. His greatest love was his family & testimony of the Savior. He loved the outdoors, especially the mountains. He spent many hours with his family camping, hiking & fishing; passing this love on to his children & grandchildren. He enjoyed sports, especially football. He enjoyed learning & had books on many different topics. He loved listening to music. One of his many talents was art, which he loved to do whenever he could. He was always active in his church, fulfilling many callings, including serving a mission to Germany. He loved working with youth, spending 20 years teaching LDS Seminary in the Uintah Basin & Richfield, Utah areas. He was a co-founder in 1972 of the original trip that became known as the Harmony Tours Church History youth trip, which continues today. He loved working with Native Americans, especially spending time with Ute, Paiute, & Navajo youth. Survived by his wife Karen Garner Kitchen; sons and daughters, Rebecca & Malen Teeples, Richard Darrell & Stephanie Kitchen, Roger E. & Lori Kitchen, Connie Kitchen, Colleen & Robert Hales, Dennis Norval & Shelly Kitchen, Don Sherman & Anita Kitchen; foster daughter, Paula Featherhat Burke; brothers & sisters, Sherman Norval (Margaret), LaRae (John) Moosman, Steven Thomas (Caline), Norma (James) Brookes; 32 grandchildren, several foster & step-grandchildren, one great grandchild, and special friends Helga & Gunther Kempkins & family of Germany. Preceded in death by his parents Norval & Fay Kitchen; parents-in-law, Ezra Hill & Madge Loveless Garner; brother, Marvin Rowley Kitchen; sisters, Carolyn Kitchen Johnson, Rosalie Kitchen, & Janice Kitchen; son-in-law, Larry Ray Phipps; grandson, Brayden Thomas Hales; foster children, Venoy Wyaskit & Don Kanosh. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, March 28th at 10:30 am at the Timpview 3rd Ward, 1075 W. 1100 N., Orem, where Viewings will also be held on Tuesday evening, March 27th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and on Wednesday morning prior to services from 9:30 to 10:15 am. Interment in Payson City Cemetery, Payson, UT. Flowers may be delivered to the Church on Tuesday afternoon from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm or on Wednesday morning from 8:00 am to 9:30 am.
