Edward Woods

October 18, 1921 - October 26, 2021

Edward Woods passed away in his own home October 26, 2021, eight days after his 100th birthday. He died peacefully in his sleep, watched over by family and Mirta Parker, his caretaker for the last 10 years of his life. Ed was a beloved husband to Olive, father to Scott, Mark, Lee and Nancy, grandfather to four grandsons and great-grandfather to eleven great-grandchildren. Ed was born October 18, 1921 in Winnipeg, CA to Edward Woods and Isabella McKinnon. He was married to Frances Olive Smith September 18, 1947. He spent his working life as an airplane engine mechanic, working in Winnipeg, Montreal and continuing his career in Southern California after emigrating with his family in 1960. A lifelong hockey fan, Ed attended games in Canada in his youth as well as holding season tickets to the LA Kings. Even after his eyesight faded he would still enjoy watching the hockey games on TV. Ed was active and healthy his entire life. He played soccer, hockey, football and golf in his youth. Golf continued to be a part of his life well into his 80’s as he and Olive would play twice per week at El Cariso Golf Course in Sylmar, CA throughout their retired years. Four generations of golfers have come from Ed and Olive’s enjoyment of the game. An avid walker, Ed enjoyed walks around his neighborhoods. After moving to Utah in 2004 with Olive to be closer to his grandkids, his daily routine included a walk across the UVU campus to the local McDonalds for a drink. He was always engaging, willing to talk to the students and workers at McDonalds and made many friends along the way. As he entered his mid-90’s his walks grew shorter, but even when he was mostly blind he did his best to continue his daily walk. Although not overly religious, Ed strongly supported his wife’s membership and service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. While not a member at the time, he attended weekly services with her. In 2011, at age 90, Ed was baptized. Ed and Olive were sealed to each other and their children in the Mount Timpanogos Temple the following year. The simple beauties in life were something Ed always appreciated. He loved roses, road trips to see family in Canada, and watching his great-grandchildren play. He loved babies and was always gentle in his interactions. Ed was never rich, but he was always generous. He lived a life that was defined by his willingness to help, whether it was assisting with a job or slipping a $20 bill whenever he could. Ed is survived by his children Mark, Lee and Nancy, three grandchildren and his eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, his wife Olive, son Scott and daughter-in-law Janet. The family would like to send special love and thanks to Mirta Parker. Mirta came into our lives as a nurse and caretaker for Olive as her health faded. After Olive passed, Mirta continued caring for Ed tirelessly, allowing him to stay in the comfort of his home. We will always be grateful for the gift of her service and will forever consider her a part of our family. Funeral Services will be held Monday, November 1st, at 11:00 am, at the Sunset Heights Stake Center, 1260 South 400 West, Orem, Utah, where a Viewing will be held prior to services from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Interment in Orem City Cemetery.
