Glenn Jay McMurtrey
April 15, 1949 - December 3, 2019
On Tuesday December 3 Glenn McMurtrey, husband, father, grandfather, golfer, gardener and artist passed away from liver failure at the age of 70. Glenn was surrounded by his wife and children as he gently left this earth life for a better one. Glenn was born in Salt Lake City, Utah April 15, 1949 to Dolly and Lawrence Jay McMurtrey. In his growing up years he moved to Kansas and then to Redmond Washington. In Redmond, Glenn played on the High School Football team and ran track. In the summers he thinned 100 acres in National Forest and chopped and stacked cords of wood with his brothers. After High School he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Central States Mission. After his mission he married his sweetheart Mary Stevenson on Aug 17, 1973 in the Salt Lake Temple. Glenn had a great love of learning throughout his life and gained college degrees from BYU and Utah State University. He earned one undergraduate degree and four master’s degrees. He loved serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a Primary teacher, High Councilor, Gospel Doctrine Teacher and Bishop. He loved the outdoors, camping, fly-fishing, hunting, and watching wildlife with his family. For years Glenn coached his kids’ softball and little league teams. One of his favorite coaching accomplishments included taking his daughter’s fast pitch softball team to Nationals and being the first team from Utah to win the championship. He was also President of Pleasant Grove’s Little League where it was his goal that “every boy gets equal turns at bat.” Glenn’s career was in Finance where he worked at BYU Provo, Hercules, Matrix Marketing, C-Entry, BYU Hawaii and the State of Utah. He retired after a successful career and surprised everyone taking up oil painting. He loved painting meaningful paintings of his grandchildren, the beautiful places he had traveled with his wife, as well as his testimony through religious themed art. One of Glenn’s favorite events was his “seafood” bashes where all his kids, grandkids, and their friends were invited. He would spend hours planning the menu, ordering “fresh” seafood and setting up for the all day event. He said it was his way of bringing the “Seattle Warf” to Utah. Survivors include his wife of 46 years Mary Stevenson McMurtrey, children Jennifer (Shawn) Jones, Michael (Lindsay), Steven (Rachel) and Nathan (Kate). Siblings, Gary McMurtrey, Kathi McMurtrey, David McMurtrey, LuAnn Summers and Jana McMurtrey. He will be truly missed by his 20 grandchildren whom he adored. He was preceded in death by his daughter Holly McMurtrey and his parents Lawrence and Dolly McMurtrey. Funeral Services will be held Monday, December 9th, at 11:30 am, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1106 East 200 South, Pleasant Grove, Utah, where a Viewing will be held prior to services from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Glenn will be buried in the Highland City Cemetery alongside his baby girl Holly McMurtrey who died Dec 10, 1975. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Primary Children’s Hospital. Funeral Directors: Utah Valley Mortuary.
