Karen Dayle Bridgers

June 14, 1948 - April 17, 2017

Karen Dayle Kirchoff Bridgers passed away on Monday, April 17, 2017 due to a pulmonary embolism. She had been hospitalized or in a care facility since December 23, 2016. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Bud, two daughters, Courtney and Mollie, and six grandchildren. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, having served in multiple callings, including Ward Relief Society President, Young Women President, and Primary President. Karen was a gifted writer and editor. She loved birds and combined her writing talent with this love. Her column in the Santa Barbara News Press, “Bird Watch,” was a regular weekly feature article on the latest rare birds to visit the county. The column came to be known as the best place for residents of Santa Barbara to learn about the joys of birding and the importance of birds to the environment. She was the author of two books, and wrote or edited many articles that appeared in local magazines. She was also the voice of The Audubon Society's Rare Bird Alert, recording phone messages as necessary about recently spotted birds that might make only occasional visits to the area. This recording helped local and national birding enthusiasts know not only what birds were in the area, but when and where to best find them. For over 35 years she uplifted and inspired many to have a greater appreciation for the environment. Her fun, energetic personality will be remembered and cherished. In 2009, Karen and her husband moved to Pleasant Grove, Utah, to be closer to family and be a part of her grandchildren's lives. There will be no funeral service. Graveside services and dedication will be held on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. A celebration of Karen's life will be held in Santa Barbara, CA on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 7:00 pm in the Cultural Hall of the LDS Stake Center in Goleta. Karen had indicated that instead of flowers, she would like family and friends to donate in her name to The Environmental Defense Fund of Santa Barbara at: http://www.environmentaldefensecenter.org/edc-donate/.
