Kim Oliver

July 26, 1952 - August 6, 2015

Randy Kim Oliver, Age 63, passed away Thursday, August 6th in Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. He was born the second child of Gene Anderson Oliver, Jr., and Marjorie Dove Morgan, the 26th of July, 1952, in Denver, CO. He grew up in Denver and Aurora, CO, until the family moved to Thousand Oaks, CA, in 1965. Kim’s father and grandfather were both airline pilots, and he grew up with a love of flying from a very young age - a love which he maintained throughout his life. He could recognize planes by the sound of their engines and would often entertain his wife by letting her know which type of airplane was flying overhead by sound alone, and would point out when the engine sound did not match the airplane shown in movies they would watch together. At one time, he was the youngest certified pilot in the country. He accomplished a dream several years ago when he piloted a P-51, screaming over Utah County with his “hair on fire” and a huge smile on his face. He was a good student in high school, lettering in football, diving and wrestling. He earned MVP twice in football, and was more than a little upset when his younger brother, Kevin, got the credit in the local paper one of those times. After graduation from high school, he attended a year at BYU before being called to serve as a missionary to the Chile, Santiago mission. Along with teaching the gospel, he became fluent in Spanish, which allowed him to serve Hispanic patients throughout his career. After his mission, he returned to BYU to study medicine and chemistry. After graduation from BYU he pursued his dream of becoming a physician. During his third year of medical school, he met Rosanne on a blind date set up by his brother and sister in-Law, Gary and Cindy. They married in 1977. With his new bride, he transferred to the University of Maryland to complete his medical training. He continued his education as a resident at St. Joseph Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, board certifying in family practice. He eventually moved to Utah County to begin his medical practice. He later board certified in emergency medicine, and joined a group of emergency physicians at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. He was a very gifted ER Physician, and was able to help many people in Utah County and surrounding areas. He practiced at Utah Valley Regional, Orem Community Hospital, Mountain View Hospital, Pioneer Hospital, Price Hospital, the Utah State Prison, and Utah State Hospital. He was well respected by physicians and staff alike, and was considered a friend by everyone. Despite his busy schedule, he and Rosanne raised 6 children together. He had a wonderful sense of humor, was always quick with a joke, and loved to tease. The kids knew that they could always make some quick cash by drawing their dad a picture. He would pay ridiculously high commission fees for this “artwork”, and they turned his office into their own private gallery. As the grandfather of 2 children, he was often found watching “Airplane”, or the Disney channel with a child on his lap. He was also known to eat Ramen Noodles with his grandson, Daniel, “Man Style” (out of the cup), and loved to sneak treats with his granddaughter, Olivia. He loved dogs, and always had one or two of them around. He made sure they were well fed, much to his wife’s chagrin, and also made certain they had plenty of blankets to sleep on, tucking them in at night with plenty of pats and sweet-talk. He was happy and honored to serve in the Bishopric of the Orem, 8th ward, and was serving as Bishop of the Orem YSA 26thWard when he passed away. He loved the young people in his ward, prayed for them, worked and played with them, and was beloved by them. He was always ready with a kind word for those who needed encouragement, or direction for those who needed his valuable advice, and was often sought out for help. His life was one of service. He was often called upon to help others with their medical needs, and never turned anyone away, but always generously rendered any assistance needed. He made certain that he served others by indexing every day. He often shared names and life experiences of those he indexed with his wife, and marveled at the wonderful lives many had lived. He recorded “tender mercies” that he noticed each day in his Journal and was always very grateful to his Father in Heaven for the small miracles that he was made aware of by this practice. He is survived by his wife, Rosanne, and children, Devin, Alexis Sorensen (Jeff), Brendon, Derek, Blake, and Mckensie, as well as his grandchildren, Daniel and Olivia Sorensen. He is also survived by his siblings, Gary, Kevin, Genette, and Keeley. Kim will be ever remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. In lieu of flowers, we would appreciate a donation to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Perpetual Education Fund. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, August 13th, at 11:00 am, at the Orem Southeast Stake Center at 824 West 800 South, Orem, Utah, where Viewings will be held Wednesday, August 12th, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and prior to services on Thursday from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Interment in Orem City Cemetery, 1520 North 800 East, Orem, Utah. Funeral Directors: Utah Valley Mortuary.
