LaMar Backus

September 9, 1931 - December 16, 2014

LaMar Adams Backus, 83, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on December 16, 2014. He was born Sept 19,1931 in Orem, Utah to James Albert Backus and Lula May Adams. He served in the Navy at the age of 17 during the Korean conflict and served for 3 years, 8 months, 17 days and 30 minutes. Not that he was counting of course. On June 30,1954, he married his sweetheart, Diane Myers, in the Manti Temple. He worked for Hill Air Force Base for 16 years then moved his family to Sedona Arizona, where he started his own service business. At the age of 46 he had his first of several heart attacks and had to retire from working his normal 20-hour days. In 1981 he left that beautiful town and moved his family back home to Utah. He returned to school at UVCC and studied computer programming, which became his new passion. He found the perfect neighborhood in Salem and for the last 34 years has enjoyed serving and living around family and wonderful friends and neighbors. His joy was to be able to fix anything for everyone that needed him, and we all needed him. He was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings in his ward and stake. He also loved serving at the Provo Temple. In 1994 he and Diane served a LDS mission in Rochester New York. LaMar is survived by his wife of 60 years and 4 children; Randy (Kyoung Sook), Brent (Linda), Calleen (Ken) Condie, Brian (Michelle); 17 grandchildren and two perfect great granddaughters; his siblings; Betty Park, Rex Backus, Bonnie Davis, Karen Klienman, Judy Nelson and Robert (Bob) Backus. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, December 20th, at 11:00 am, at the LDS Church, 25 West Apple Blossom Way, Salem, UT, where a Viewing will be held from 9:30 am to 10:45 am. Interment in Provo City Cemetery. We are so grateful to Utah Home Health Hospice for their loving care of dad in his last week. Funeral Directors: Utah Valley Mortuary.
