Mr. Lee S. MacKay
November 10, 1924 - February 20, 2013
Lee Stringham MacKay, 88, passed away Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at the Golden Skyline Assisted Living Center in Ephraim, Utah. He was born November 10, 1924 in Provo, Utah to Lincoln Clyde and Veda Stringham MacKay. He married Nancy Cox on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1947, in the LDS Salt Lake City Temple. He is survived by his wife Nancy; children, Alan (Kathy) of Georgetown, TX; Alice (Lanny) Wakefield of Provo, UT; Michael (Milette) of Victorville, CA; Gary (Linda) of Provo, UT; Andrew (Sue) of Idaho Falls; 21 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Clyde (Beverly), his son Benjamin and three grandsons. Lee lived in Provo until second grade and then spent the rest of his grade school years between Utah and Nevada where his father was building roads for Dodge Construction. He attended High School in Fallon, and Winnemucca, Nevada. At graduation, he joined the Army Air Corps and began pilot training in Billings, Montana. He then transferred to gunnery school at Yuma, Arizona. As a gunner he participated in many B24 Bomber flights over Germany. At the end of World War II, he went into the active reserves for three years and then joined the National Guard. While in the Guard, he took Food Services training and served as Mess Sergeant for twenty nine years. He was activated during the Cuban crisis and spent a year at Fort Hood waiting to be deployed. When he returned home to Provo, he became active in the VFW both in Provo and Mt. Pleasant. Lee attended BYU, Utah Valley Technical College, and LDS Business College, and studied Accounting. He worked for a CPA firm in Provo, then as a bookkeeper for the Idarado Mining Company in Colorado. He moved the family back to Utah and began working in Masonry. Over the next few years, he was involved in the construction of many schools, houses and Churches. In 1967 he started working for H&R Block and worked as Manager there until he retired after 30 years. Lee enjoyed Square and Round dancing and was involved at BYU and in many local clubs where he and Nancy were well known Round Dance instructors. They traveled to many parts of the United States because of their love of dancing. After retiring, he and Nancy moved to Fairview, where he took up woodworking and spent many volunteer hours at the Museum. Lee was well liked and enjoyed meeting with friends in the mornings at the local café. He loved his family and was very proud of their accomplishments. He will be greatly missed. The family express their appreciation and thanks to all those who helped care for him in his final days. A Viewing will be held Sunday, February 24th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Fairview Senior Citizens Center, 160 N 100 W, Fairview, UT. Graveside Services will be held Monday, February 25th at 12:00 Noon in the Provo City Cemetery with Military Honors. Funeral Directors: Utah Valley Mortuary.
