Marilyn Groesbeck
March 31, 1934 - November 15, 2018
Marilyn Olive Thorne Groesbeck 3-31-1934 - 11-15-2018 Marilyn Olive Thorne Groesbeck was born on March 31, 1934. Mom grew up in the mining town of Bingham Canyon with her parents Silas S and Mary Olive Thorne, and her older siblings David, Afton, Reva and Alta. She always spoke fondly of her youth and her experiences of growing up in such a unique town. She graduated from Bingham High School in 1952 and the following year attended Brigham Young University where she met and fell in love with her future husband Monty Groesbeck. They were married in the Logan Temple on July 28, 1954. Their first child, David (Krista) Groesbeck, was born on December 14, 1956 followed by a daughter, Deborah (Greg) Wahlin, and two more sons, Jeffrey (Vicki) Groesbeck and Douglas (Pam) Groesbeck. Soon after the birth of David, mom journeyed by boat across the Pacific to join dad in Okinawa as part of his Air Force duties. She spoke both fondly and apprehensively of this trip and it would become the only time she traveled overseas as mom had a great appreciation for the joys of being at home. Mom’s home was one in which everyone was welcome. She was a fastidious housekeeper, great cook, amazing baker and a giving neighbor. Her cooking blessed the lives of her family as they met often to enjoy a good meal or dessert, especially on Sundays. Her grandchildren loved Sundays at Grandmas. She taught her children to do well and to be good. Mom always had a good book close by and her love of reading was passed on to many of her children and grandchildren. After Monty’s retirement, they enjoyed many adventures with their trailer, ATV’s and close friends. To know Marilyn was to know that she was a woman of few words. But those words were ever truthful and revealed her gentle spirit. She sought understanding in lieu of confrontation and held to the old axiom of “if you can’t say something nice….” Mom was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints serving in various callings throughout her life. In addition to her children, she is survived by her 12 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, as well as her brother David (Gwen) and sister Alta (Gene). She was preceded in death by her husband Monty, parents, sisters Afton Hallett (Loren), and Reeva Parker (Keith). Mom: We look forward to the presence of your memory in our hearts. Be at peace. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, November 20th, at 11:00 am, at the Provo Grandview 6th Ward, 1600 North 1880 West, Provo, Utah, where Viewings will be held Monday, November 19th from 6:00 to 7:30 pm and prior to services on Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 am.
