Marilyn Joan Mullen

December 27, 1934 - May 16, 2018

Marilyn Joan Mullen (nee Hagist), 83, ascended into heaven on May 16, 2018. Born at her grandparents’ home on December 27, 1934 in rural Washington County, Iowa, Marilyn was the second child and only daughter of Stella and Richard Hagist. She is survived by her older brother (Jack) and two younger brothers (Eugene and Robert) who were born after her father returned home from serving in the Navy during WWII. Raised in the small farming town of Keota, Iowa, Marilyn led an idyllic life, attending school with the same 31 children from elementary through high school. She played the trombone, earning the 1st position in the high school band. After graduating from Keota High School, Marilyn moved to Battle Creek, Michigan, where she met Paul Muehlmann in 1954. After marrying in 1955, their union produced seven children: Autumn Schumacher (David), Theresa Brunner (Michael), Richard (Erin Quinn), Frederick Paul Jr (Janet), James, Eric, and Mary Amerson. Along with her seven children, Marilyn is survived by 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Marilyn was an excellent seamstress, making all her children’s clothing while they were growing up. She played guitar and banjo, enjoyed playing card games and square dancing, and took karate lessons. She also enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting, and artistic coloring. After her divorce, Marilyn met and fell in love with Raymond Mullen, who was a retired Army Master Sargent, having served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Marilyn and Ray married on October 30, 1982. Together, they raised a Shiatsu dog named Ti. Ray preceded her in death on September 11, 1994. Marilyn worked as the Warrant Clerk for the Battle Creek Police Department until she retired in 1996. She was baptized in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on August 15, 1989 and served two LDS missions in Chicago, Illinois and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Marilyn lived in American Fork, Utah for the last 10 years of her life. Thus, funeral services were held at the Utah Valley Mortuary, Lindon, Utah (http://www.utahvalleyfuneral.com/) on May 21, 2018. Marilyn will be buried next to Ray at the Fort Custer National Cemetery, Battle Creek, Michigan on May 29, 2018 following funeral services at Bachman Hebble Funeral Services, Inc., Battle Creek, Michigan (http://www.bachmanhebble.com/).
