Marsha Susan Cheney
August 17, 1945 - September 7, 2020
Marsha Susan Cheney, 75, our sweet wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away in Intensive Care at Utah Valley Hospital after fighting atrial fibrillation and kidney and lung cancer. As a Jackson Hole native, she was strong and determined until the end and is greatly missed by her husband, her large posterity and her many good friends and neighbors. She had many accomplishments during her life of service to family and her country. Her favorites were her husband and 6 sons with whom she traveled in 48 states during her husband’s military service. She was always so proud of her sons’ progress in Church, scouting, community, college and their careers. They also gave her 19 grandkids and 10 great-grandkids to love and nurture. She excelled in music, earned a B.A. in French at BYU and later an M.S. in Strategic Intelligence while serving her country in the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC. On the side, she studied art at City Colleges of Chicago and later under a German master painter, Albert Helzfeld. While living in Germany with her family, she created original watercolors and old master technique oil paintings and produced limited edition prints, including complete matting and framing. Her lifetime of LDS Church service included Primary president, Relief Society president twice, ward and stake Young Women’s president, seminary and gospel doctrine teacher, and two French-speaking senior missions to Quebec, Canada and Ghana, West Africa. She especially loved being a temple worker in Washington, DC, Friedrichsdorf, Germany, Montreal, Canada, Provo, Utah, and Ghana. On this last mission, she taught Primary again, this time to the humble, faithful children of West Africa. In the Ghana Temple, she enjoyed working daily with French- and English-speaking families who had traveled far to obtain the blessing of temple marriages and sealings. During her lifetime, she experienced 20 years of foreign residency. She is survived by her husband, Colonel Craig Cheney, sons Douglas (Melanie), Daryl (Kimberlee), Daryn (Rebecca), David (Mylla), Dan (Katie), and Derek (April); sisters Judy Kortum (Rick), Peggy Mathiesen (Jan), Bertie Eastman (Mike), and Christine Eastman (Rod). Her parents Robert and Barbara VanDeburg of Jackson, Wyoming pre-deceased her. Marsha’s legacy is a composite of unselfishness, hard work, service, compassion for the underprivileged, patriotism, optimism, and a strong religious commitment. As she passes to the other side of the veil, she bids a fond goodbye to her husband of 52 years, her large family, and many associates, students, neighbors and friends throughout the world.
