Roy Allen Tenney
June 8, 1937 - December 20, 2021
Roy Allen Tenney (84), finished his mortal journey on the afternoon of December 20, 2021, surrounded by members of his family. Roy was born on June 8, 1937, in Thatcher, Arizona, to Helaman Pratt Tenney and Nora Allen. Roy met his companion and sweetheart of 62 years, Joan Widdison, in an education class at Brigham Young University. They were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on August 27, 1959. Roy’s career included teaching fifth graders in Arizona, working in insurance, working for the seminaries and institute programs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in St. George, Salt Lake, and Wyoming, and teaching at Scera Park Elementary school in Orem, Utah where he was awarded Teacher of the Year. At Scera Park, Roy used a unique one-on-one tutoring system that successfully helped many students leave the special education program and integrate back into the regular classroom. He helped countless children learn to read. Besides being a successful educator, Roy was a passionate gardener, creating both beauty and sustenance. Always an entrepreneur, he was constantly trying new ideas and new businesses. One of the defining character traits Roy possessed and fostered was his love for the Lord Jesus Christ. He was a wonderful missionary, serving four full-time missions as well as part-time missions at home with his wife for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved his service in a branch presidency at the Missionary Training Center. Roy enjoyed talking on the phone and spent many hours teaching and studying the scriptures with others. He was an avid Scouter and helped many young men progress through the scouting program. He served in numerous church callings and was a faithful home teacher. He loved to travel and shared that love with his family. He particularly enjoyed visiting the Holy Land with his wife and worked for many years helping recruit students to participate in the Brigham Young University Study Abroad Program at the Jerusalem Center in Israel. Roy is survived by his wife Joan and his seven children, Brent, Mark (Amy), Keith (Sharolyn), Craig (Shari), Joy (Jeff), Nora (Timothy), and Jacob (Becky), 25 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two sisters-in-law, Barbara Tenney and Marie Widdison. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, December 28th, at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4056 Timpview Drive, Provo, Utah, where a Viewing will be held prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:45 am.
