Frederic Ensign

August 22, 1937 - September 18, 2015

Frederic Stonely Ensign, 78, passed away peacefully in Provo, Utah, on Sept. 18, 2015. He was born to Hugo Boden Ensign and Ivy Elinor Stonely in Logan, Utah, on Aug. 22, 1937. He grew up in Salt Lake City and Ogden, graduating from Ogden High School with the class of 1955. He was thrilled to attend his 60th high school reunion just a few days before his death. Fred served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Great Lakes mission and graduated with a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Utah. He used his artistic talents throughout his professional life as both a graphic designer and as a designer and artist for the Central Intelligence Agency. He also enjoyed painting—especially with watercolors and acrylics, photography, stained glass and other arts and crafts. His paintings could be found in galleries in Salt Lake City and were recognized in art contests throughout Utah. After completing his education, Fred worked in New York City, then moved to Washington, D.C., where he met Alice Milberry Throop. They both worked in the same design studio and were married April 8, 1967. They had six children and spent most of their married life in Silver Spring and Derwood, Maryland, as well as in Frankfurt, Germany for two tours of government service from 1978-81 and 1983-86. Fred and Alice divorced in 1994. His friends aptly described Fred as an “adventurer.” He loved to travel and had visited most countries in Europe, Africa and South America, either on assignment for work or on family “vacations”—which were renamed family “adventures” for their ambitious plans. Those who loved him will remember his wit, memory for dates and trivia, etymological musings, exuberance for politics and dedicated viewing of Utah Jazz games. He loved reflecting on his Utah and Mormon heritage, was proud of his children and their accomplishments and recognized the remarkable life he was blessed with. After retiring from the CIA to Salt Lake City in 1996, Fred married Judy Davis Call in 1999. The two eventually settled in Saint George, Utah, and enjoyed hiking, continued traveling, spending time in Church service and with friends and family. Fred is survived by five children: Marikka (Jason) Ludlow, Jordan (Christopher) Karpowitz, Ethan (Jean Eastham), Abigail (Craig) Snow and Gillian (Jared) Lott; 16 grandchildren: Stefan (Elizabeth) Ludlow, Caleb Karpowitz, Quinn Karpowitz, Kenzie Snow, Zachary Snow, Camille Karpowitz, Erik, Katja and Kevyn Ludlow, Jared Ludlow, Zachary Karpowitz, Garrison Lott, Haley and Gamma Eastham, Malihah Lott and Jake Snow; and three great-grandchildren: Isaiah, Levi and Jonah Ludlow. He is preceded in death by his wife, Judy; daughter, Chelsey Jo Ensign; brother, Lee Stonely Ensign and sister, Ruth Joyce Ensign Pierson. His parents and first wife also precede him in death. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015 at 1 p.m. at the Desert Hills LDS Chapel, 675 East Desert Hills Dr., Saint George, Utah, where a Viewing will be held prior from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Interment at Tonaquint Cemetery in Saint George.
