Glenda Makin
November 2, 1937 - January 31, 2022
Glenda May Austin Makin – age 84 American Fork, Utah Glenda slipped peacefully into heaven late Monday night, January 31st 2022. She was born November 2nd 1937 to parents, Glen C Austin and May Condor as the oldest of 3 and attended grade school in the historic Herrington school building. She graduated from AFHS, class of 1956. Glenda met Reed Makin while working at the local Cameo Theater. He ran the projector; she sold the candy; and it’s been true love ever since. They married when she was 16 years old in the LDS Manti Temple on July 15th, 1955. Glenda became a mother in 1956 when her first son Mark was born while they were living in an apartment next to the theater where she met Reed. The family grew with the addition of Paul, Brent, Trudy and Jamie. They eventually settled in the home where Reed was born and raised. She is described as a patient and dedicated mother who thought the world of her children. In addition to being an attentive wife and mother, Glenda spent many of her younger years involved in community events and groups as well as multiple types of jobs. These included but are not limited to: Reams Bakery, Catering Services, Dress Maker, tailoring services, school lunch services, managed a Hearts Gas Station, worked at the Utah State Training School, managed group homes for Danville Corporation, and at one point sold fabric out of her front porch. She was most well known for her community participation in the daughters of the Utah Pioneers and the Jeepettes, a service club associated with the Utah County Jeep Patrol that her husband and father participated in. Glenda was also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held callings such as Primary Teacher, Camp Director and Boy Scout Den Mother. Glenda inherited the love of working with her hands from her father and was never farther than an arm’s reach from her current project. Glenda’s home has always been filled with her creations from all her various craft endeavors. Her favorite projects include ceramic figurines, porcelain dolls, oil paintings, jewelry making, quilting, scrapbooking & paper piecing, and knitting & crocheting. The only thing that brought her more joy than creating these pieces, was giving them away to her friends and family. After Reed’s retirement in 1986, Glenda and Reed became inseparable. They traveled locally and internationally through cruising and road trips. Family has always been a priority for Reed and Glenda as evidenced by the many fishing, camping, and jeeping trips that dotted their life together. Reed and Glenda have been devoted parents and grandparents attending many activities including football games, baseball games, gymnastic meets, theatrical plays, ballet dances, recitals and more. Glenda loved being a Grandma to 15 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter. Glenda patiently cared for her husband Reed during his most difficult years of poor health until she enlisted the help of Bel Aire Assisted Living in American Fork. After his passing in 2020 she faced the pandemic lockdown with resilience. In true Glenda fashion, she expanded her family circle to include the other residents, staff, and nurses there. Throughout her life, Glenda made friends wherever she went. Her sweet disposition and magnetic personality made her unforgettable. Glenda is survived by her siblings, Jon Austin (Kathie), Allen Austin (Louise), her adoring children, Mark Glen Makin (Connie), Reed Paul Makin, Brent Austin Makin (Jill), Trudy Ann Makin Lewis, Jamie Makin Pace (Bill), and many grandchildren Glenda is undoubtedly celebrating her reunion with her dear husband Reed LeRoy Makin and other family who preceded her in death: her parents; Glen and May Austin, son-in-law, Stuart William Lewis and grandchildren; KaraLee Lewis, and Brody Makin. Funeral Services will be held Thursday February 10th, at 11:00 am, at the American Fork 6th Ward Building located at 320 North 100 East, American Fork, Utah with a morning viewing from 9:00-10:30am.
