Owen Bartholomew

March 17, 1929 - December 31, 2021

Owen Bartholomew (92) died of natural causes on December 31, 2021 at his residence in Springville, Utah. He was born March 17, 1929, in Fayette, Utah, as the 10th of 13 children to Floyd and Pearl (Larsen) Bartholomew, and was raised in Springville, Utah. Owen graduated from Springville High School. Following graduation, he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Western Canada (1949-1951). He earned the money for his mission working for W. W. Clyde Construction. After completing his mission he went back to work for W.W. Clyde to save money for college, and attended Brigham Young University. While at BYU he entered the ROTC program. During his college years he courted and married Jacqueline Ann Martin, who had lived right around the corner from him in Springville, Utah while they were growing up. Owen graduated from BYU and received an Air Force commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. He served for 24 years and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. The Air Force took him all over the world, including Taiwan, Thailand, and Korea. He was also stationed in many parts of the United States. Air Defense Control was his specialty. In later years, after retirement, he loved sitting on his patio watching aircraft fly overhead. Owen loved being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in many callings including elder’s quorum president, high counselor, scout master, bishopric counselor, and bishop. He also served as the Tacoma, Washington Stake Farm Director. After retirement he and Jackie served missions together in Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and Australia. They also worked together in the Family History Center in Tacoma, Washington for many years. Owen loved to hunt, fish, and garden. His gardens usually produced enough to feed a small village. He shared the produce with everyone. Following his retirement, he took up quilting and produced over 1,500 quilts, most of which were donated to LDS Humanitarian Aid (or other aid organizations) or given as gifts to family and friends. He was also a master storyteller, and his children and grandchildren loved to listen to his stories. Owen and Jackie lived a full and happy life and loved to serve others. They shared 61 years together before Jackie passed away in 2016. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by all 12 of his brothers and sisters, his wife Jaqueline Ann Martin Bartholomew, his youngest son Gail Bartholomew (Christina Bailey), and his grandson John Bartholomew. He is survived by his son Craig Bartholomew (Laurie) of Sparta, Wisconsin, daughter Karen Brookbsy (Robin) of Tacoma, Washington, son Brian Bartholomew (Jozianne) of Olathe, Kansas, daughter Carole Lifferth (Richard) of Springville, Utah, daughter Jeanne Bartholomew of Tacoma, Washington, daughter Richelle Kulju (Fran) of Tacoma, Washington, and 24 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren. Owen’s family would like to extend a special thanks to the workers, aides, nurses, hospice staff, and Grasslands LDS Branch members at Ashford Assisted Living facility, in Springville, Utah that were a special part of Owen’s life for the last 2 years. A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, January 8, 2022, at 11:00 am, at the LDS chapel (Kolob 8th Ward) located at 840 South 400 East, Springville, Utah, where a Viewing will be held prior to services from 9:30 to 10:30 am.
